Chelmer is a quiet, leafy inner suburb located about 7 kilometres west of the CBD. Chelmer is mostly surrounded by the river and is bordered by Graceville. Oxley Road and two railway lines cut through the middle of the suburb.

Chelmer is now one of the premier suburbs of Brisbane housing several ornate Queenslanders and offering great riverside views. The  properties located at Laurel Avenue are known as some of the most exquisite homes, with large camphor laurel trees lining the street.

In the middle of Chelmer lies the Milpera State High School: a multicultural school providing excellent education for both locals and newcomers alike. There may not be a primary school in the Chelmer, however, schools in the surrounding suburbs easily provide that option.

The suburb is home to the Western Magpies AFC and the Kenmore Bears AFC located at the heart of Chelmer. There is also a fitness centre along Oxley Road.
